Explanation of the Committees of
First United Methodist Church
Church Council
Meetings: six meetings a year (every other month)
Day & time: fourth Tuesday at 7:00 P.M.
Purpose: The Church Council is the highest decision-making body of the church. It is made up of all the committee chairpersons and some members-at-large. The Church Council becomes “the Charge Conference” when the District Superintendent presides to conduct business that only a “Charge Conference” can do (elect officers, set the pastor’s compensation, set the advance special giving, review the membership, accept special gifts to the church)
Archives
Meetings: when needed
Day & time: determined when there is need for a meeting
Purpose: The Archives Committee is to preserve the history of First United Methodist Church by maintaining documents and items that tell its story.
Auditing Task Force
Meetings: as needed in the spring of the year
Day & time: set by the task force
Purpose: The Auditing Task Force has the responsibility to audit the financial records of the church using a simple standardized form supplied by the Annual Conference.
Casserole Ministry
Meetings: None
Day & time: N/A
Purpose: The Casserole Ministry has one purpose and function: to provide meals for our membership & constituents who have an acute need (short term).
Communion Stewards
Meetings: One organizational meeting
Day & time: to be set
Purpose: the Communion Stewards are responsible for securing and getting ready for communion on the first Sunday of the month or on special occasions (twelve times a year).
Education Team
Meetings: Four meetings a year
Day & time: Monday at 7:00 P.M.
Purpose: The Education Team oversees the Sunday School program from infancy through the fifth grade. It also oversees camping scholarships and special events that involve children. The Education Team develops any extra programs for children. The Preschool board reports to the Education Committee. The Education Team also works with ASK churches to put on a joint Vacation Bible School each summer.
Endowment Committee
Meetings: five times a year
Day & time: Thursday mornings at 7:00 A.M. as needed
Purpose: The Endowment Committee is to promote the Church Endowment Fund.
Finance Committee
Meetings: eleven meetings a year
Day & time: third Monday at 6:00 P.M.
Purpose: The Finance Committee is charged with assembling the church budget, raising the money, and monitoring the fiscal responsibility of all those who spend church money. It also is responsible for investing funds of the church.
Funeral Meal Committee
Meetings: N/A
Day & time: N/A
Purpose: The Funeral Meal Committee oversees funeral meals for member families when one of our members dies.
Head Ushers
Meetings: N/A
Day & time: N/A
Purpose: The head ushers oversee the monthly usher teams to make sure that they carry out their role. The head ushers also turn the lights out after second service and lock the doors.
Memorials Committee
Meetings: as needed
Day & time: varies
Purpose: The Memorials Committee acknowledges all gifts given to First United Methodist Church in memory of a deceased loved one. The Committee determines appropriate “permanent” items to purchase for the church’s use in memory of those who have died.
Missions Commission
Meetings: nine meetings a year
Day & time: first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 P.M.
Purpose: The Missions Commission promotes mission giving and mission participation on the part of the congregation. It recommends the Advance Special giving for the church. It over sees the spending of the Mission Fund.
Outreach & Member Support Committee
Meetings: Ten meetings a year
Day & time: third Monday of the month at 6:00 P.M.
Purpose: The Outreach & Member Support Committee cares for the membership of the church and develops avenues to reach out to attract new persons to Christ and to His church. It is to be an advocate for The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20) to all the membership and leadership. It also has the job of creating events that further the fellowship of the church. It is to create multi-generational programs as well.
Preschool Board
Meetings: nine meetings a year
Day & time: fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 P.M.
Purpose: The Preschool Board oversees the work of our “Little Friends Preschool” – including the hiring of the teacher and assistant, and evaluating their work. The Board is responsible for developing and implementing a plan to fund the preschool so that it is self-sufficient.
Social Concerns Committee
Meetings: nine meetings a year
Day & time: second Monday of the month at 6:30 P.M.
Purpose: The Social Concerns Committee seeks to meet needs arising in our local community. It administers aid to the needy (focusing on rental assistance and utilities). It also conducts special drives to raise food for the local Red Cross chapter and to solicit gifts for underprivileged children as determined through the Plymouth public school system. It oversees the selling of Krogers and Martins coupons on the first and third Sundays of the month.
Staff-Parish Relations Committee
Meetings: nine meetings a year
Day & time: second Monday of the month at 7:00 P.M.
Purpose: The Staff-Parish Relations Committee serves as the church’s personnel committee—hiring and terminating staff, developing job descriptions for all staff, setting compensation for all staff, and serving as liaison between the congregation and staff.
Stewardship Committee
Meetings: seven meetings a year
Day & time: to be determined
Purpose: The Stewardship Committee is in charge of the Fall Finance Campaign—but, has the larger responsibility of educating the congregation as to what it means to be “a good steward”.
Trustees
Meetings: twelve meetings a year
Day & time: second Monday of the month at 6:30 P.M.
Purpose: The Trustees oversee every detail that has to do with property matters. The Trustees are the legal representatives of the church.
Worship Committee
Meetings: four meetings a year
Day & time: third Wednesday of the month at 4:30 P.M.
Purpose: The Worship Committee works with the pastor to develop effective worship. It oversees worship leaders, ushers, greeters, communion stewards, sound technicians, and acolytes. The committee insures that there is training for all of these roles.
Youth Council
Meetings: six meetings a year
Day & time: third Tuesday of the month at 5:00 P.M.
Purpose: The Youth Council oversees our youth ministry—including serving as a liaison to Adam Street Ministries and to SMILE. It is responsible for the junior high and senior high Sunday school classes. Anything that involves ministry for and with youth falls under its jurisdiction.
