My devotional book that I am using this year is entitled When You Pray: Daily Practices for Prayerful Living by Bishop Rueben Job (2009). Each day’s devotions concludes with the same scriptural blessing, Hebrews 13:5c-6 which reads:
“I will never leave you or forsake you.”
6So we can say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper;
I will not be afraid.
What can anyone do to me?”
The phrase, “I will not be afraid,” caused me to stop and reflect on what it is that makes me afraid. I would pass the question along to you—what makes you afraid? Does health issues . . . does the present economy . . . do family issues . . . does being alone frighten you? The answer to the question posed will vary from person to person according to the age and circumstance in life. The fact is, however, we all have issues that send chills down our back. From time to time, there are issues that wake us up at night and cause us to toss and turn in quiet darkness of our bedrooms.
The writer of Hebrews reminds us that Jesus made a promise to us that he will never abandon us; therefore, we do not need to be afraid. Good news: Jesus keeps his promises!
